Why Pay Retail?

Why pay retail? I have said it before and I will say it again: We live in a wasteful culture! I cannot tell you how many times I buy NEW WITH TAGS clothes second hand. People just buy stuff and it sits in their closet, they never wear it, they don't return it....then they need to make room in their closet for new stuff that they won't wear, so the donate it. And I buy it.

Most of my daughters wardrobe is secondhand.

For example:

New with tags, $22 Retail Izod, Khaki shorts. I paid $2.00

She is a Elf fan, we watch it every Christmas. New with tags. From Kohls, I paid just a couple of bucks....

Sometimes things are new without tags. You can tell by the crispness of the label. Clothes that have been worn and washed multiple times, the tag will soften over time. If you check the tag and it is crisp and bright, chances are it was never worn or washed.

Tag is crisp! New item. 99 cents

Also a fun thing is to find unique stuff. Stuff you won't find at the mall or Target.

Can't go wrong with Bob Marley! (50 cents)

....or the Beatles! 50 cents...

Ren and Stimpy!!! Oh the compliments she gets from everyone over the age of 35 when she wears this shirt! Of course, kids her age are like "who?"  Only $1.

Liz Clairborne....$1

Don't ask Mr. Owl. He will eat the whole thing!

50 cents

My daughter likes the weird stuff. 50 cents (new with tags)

Again, she likes the weird stuff. 50 cents, new with tags

Long sleeve shirt for the few days a year that it is cold in Florida. $2

Every year at my daughters school, there is a daddy-daughter dance. Parents will run out and by their daughter a $100 dress for them to wear for one night in elementary school. That is so not happening in my world. Are they insane?

Here are some of the dresses I have picked up for my daughter. For the dance and also casual one for wearing on a nice summer day.

This one was new with tags, Limited Too, $72. I scored it for $2. BRAND NEW LIMITED TOO! TWO DOLLARS!!

Teal is one of her favorite colors. She wore this to a wedding last summer. $2.

The next two are casual summer dresses. Like for attending birthday parties and whatnot....$1 for each of them.

And proof that I have raised my daughter to know better: Although she is only 9, she wears an adult size 8 womens shoe. Trying to find a pair of size eight shoes (retail, newish used shoes are more of a challenge to find)....all the shoes had high heels. We went to three different stores. Finally my daughter says..."You know, I just kick off my shoes when I dance anyhow. Its kind of stupid to spend money on a pair of shoes that I will only wear once and then take them off . But I really could use a new pair of sandals, I doubt anyone is going to be looking at my feet"
So I bought her a nice pair of sandals that she wears everyday. $40

So, I highly recommend shopping secondhand. I shop there for myself and for my son as well.

Please consider reading the book  Get Real, What Kind of World are you buying?

It is a book that I really think should be recommended reading in the schools. I bought it (at a thrift shop) and it was fascinating!  It really changes how you look at things and how you shop. And the story behind every thing you buy.

WTF Wednesday

One of my favorite things about  thrift store shopping...(I mean, besides from finding awesome shit) is discovering things that make you wonder "who the hell owned this at one time and who is going to be the next person who buys it?"

This one kind of scared me. Like a voodoo black magic starter kit

Creepy nylon dolls jammed in a glass jar. For only $1.50 each they can be yours. Pretty sure they are still there as I have seen them on the shelf for the last 3 months.

I am assuming that this is some sort of class project gone wrong. Or perhaps just some ugly ass ceramic thingy

Not the Lincoln head bust. That's dumb, but I am referring to that other thing. The Native American popping through the black wolf head alien style.

This next one isn't from a thrift shop, its from Target. Target is my second favorite place to shop. My first is thrift shops, of course.

Anyhow....my son discovered this and mentioned how it looks like a butt in the background. OMG, it does!

It can never be unseen.

Check back soon, my next blog will be about clothes shopping second hand.

If you enjoy reading my blog, please follow and also check out my shops (in the side bar) and if you are up to more fun stuff and secret sales, follow me on Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter.....not Reddit (that one sucks, you wont find me there)

Mid Century Fashion

I hadn't been thrifting in awhile. The family and I spent spring break in Park City, Utah. My kids have never seen snow before. Honestly, my husband and I were in no hurry to relive those snowy days. We are from Detroit and we moved to Florida 20 years ago...because we got sick and tired of being cold. So we put off taking our kids to see snow for as long as we could get away with it. Now at ages 9 and 12...we finally broke down and took a wintery, chilly vacation. It was fun seeing them enjoy the snow and snow activities. But after a week of headaches and ear popping from the high altitude, we couldn't return to Florida fast enough!

So that is why I haven't been shopping as much. I spent the week prior to the trip getting ready (buying winter clothes...etc) and a few days after recouping and getting use to the time change. Soon enough I got itchy to get out!

For the most part, I didn't have great luck. A book or knick-knack here and there. The last place I hit, is usually a place I don't typically bother with. Unless I am bored and its on the way to another better place. Anyhoo...I happen to be in the area and popped in. I am so glad I did! Jack pot with a huge selection of mid century craft and knitting magazines and books. Not that I give a shit about knitting and crafting, but the style and fashion in these books is to die for! Some serious Jackie O/ Mad Men stuff.

Here is just some of my score:

^^My Favorite^^

And lots more...Pictures are kinda crappy because I was really excited and rushed into snapping pics.

Another really cool thing is that apparently this thrift shop had a special thing going on where you pick a random slip of paper indicating a discount that you receive once you are at the counter paying. I have ALWAYS picked 10%. So much so, that I just assumed all the slips were 10%. However this time my slip said 50%! Holy crap! ( I would have bought more, but that's why they have you pick the discount AFTER you have decided what to purchase). Sneaky.

All these sweet mid century (and some from the 1920, 30s and 40s) are available here:

Why do I Blog?

Why do I blog?  (An honest retrospect over the years)

1) I enjoy it. Really I do. I think it is fun to write, even if people aren't interested. I don't care because I still think its fun.

2) For some reason, as you may have noticed, I don't have a lot of followers, however, I have a ton of views. Like a lot. I am guessing it is because I am not very tech savvy and I don't have things set up correctly or whatever. I probably need to look into that....

3)This blog brings a lot of traffic to my 2 Etsy shops. I don't really know if those turn into sales or not, but I am okay with that. I just love to know that somehow I am making a connections with other people that share my love of vintage goodies.

4) If you have been reading my blog over the years, you can see that I am really big on promoting small and independent businesses and well as charities. I have lots of talented friends and I like to brag about them.

5) I am also big into the arts and I like to feature artists. My favorite artist is my 12 year old son, Evan. (but I like other artists too)

6) I like to swear, a lot. Which is why my 9 year old daughter is not allowed to read my blog. Give her a couple of years, she still has a few words to learn. So far, she has learned "Fuck" "ass" and "Bitch" none of which I can take credit for, all learned at school.

7) I think things are funny. Things that other people may not think are funny. That's okay. Shopping at thrift shops can be so entertaining, and if you go as often as me, you may look at things differently. There are things for sale that shouldn't be for sale, there are interesting people, like the old man buying at least a couple of dozen used bras and undies (remember when I mentioned things for sale that shouldn't be for sale...underwear falls into that category). Anyhow, I don't judge. I love interesting people way more than boring people.

8) I blog because things in general are interesting and funny.

9) I get really excited when I score some sweet vintage finds and I love to share that joy with all the kind souls who read my blog. It's so much fun when I have a day of shopping and my trunk is full, and I just can't wait to open my bags and lovingly drool over my bounty.

10) when I die from suffocating under my pile of vintage stash, you will have my blog to remember me by.....

Anyhow, that is just some of the reasons why I love to blog. And now I have to force my daughter to turn off icarly and get in the shower.

Now is the part that I request you to follow my blog, and follow me on all the social medias...like, just all of them. I am there...seriously, I don't fool around. All of them. Except Reddit. What the hell is that anyhow?

Until next time...bye!

PLAYTIME!

I have been scouting out some new places lately...You just never know, some are crappy and some are amazing.

This new thrift shop that opened up some what near me, well, it really doesn't have a large selection at all. But what is does have is usually pretty awesome, and priced at actually thrift shop prices.

I usually pop in there when I have a moment, its close enough, I pass it every day.

Last week when I popped in there, I spotted these unique treasures. They are those wall entertainment toys by Anatex Enterprises that you may see in a doctors waiting room or a preschool. Super fun retro wood cutouts and perfectly worn from love.

These things aren't small, they are about 2.5 feet tall, I think they would be so fun in a nursery.

This next one, has the patterns worn off the little yellow turny things, but I had such a cool idea (unfortunately, I don't have any pregnant friends). How cool would it be to personalize this for a baby shower gift. Get small stickers made from family members faces and anything else personal, a picture of a pet, the house, a stuffed animal, sesame street characters....and stick them on all the faded turny things. I think that would be the most creative and personal baby shower gift that someone could receive. Otherwise it doesn't look super great. My 9 year old daughter looked at it and said, "soooo....a baby is supposed to learn about road signs?" haha, that is what she could detect by the little sticker parts remaining.

These wall entertainment centers are available here

I also came across some awesome vintage book at the flea market this week.

The thing with flea markets is that sometimes the prices are ridiculous and some times, you get a bargain. Thankfully the flea market is about 1 mile from my house, so I stop in often enough to know where to look.

When I saw these! Oh how I wish there were more. I remember when I was in 4th grade, we would get the school book order form. I never actually ordered any books, but I always ordered a Dynamite magazine. Every month. I think they were only $1, which was an affordable price.

I only found 2 at the flea market. Better than none, I suppose.

Fonzie and Pinky!!

The Six Million Dollar man vs the Bionic Woman.

I hope the Bionic Woman wins....you know, because of girl power an shit...

By the way, only the cool kids got the Dynamite magazines. The dorks got books. I'm guessing because their parents made them get books.

These books/magazines and more are available here

And don't forget to check out my $1.50 sale section. I am clearing out so many books that it will make your head explode! Check it out, they are going fast.
